The following sections provide an indication of the subjects covered in the Creative Media Director programme. *

Graphics, illustration and design:

Students will learn industry-standard graphics and desktop publishing software (including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator), with a strong emphasis on creative application. Colour theory and interface design are also covered along with a comprehensive introduction to fonts and typography. On completion of this section, students will have a strong foundation in graphic design for print, screen and new media applications.

Web Design and Online Publishing:

HTML, Macromedia Flash & Dreamweaver and PHP/MySQL are all covered as part of this section. Internet and networking are taught to allow students to develop a deeper understanding of these rapidly-developing fields. In addition to these 'staple' technologies, additional related subjects are also covered including Flash action scripting, JavaScript, QTVR, audio and video streaming, dynamic web publishing, databases and server-side technologies.

CD and DVD Authoring:

Modern multimedia applications demand professional authoring tools and delivery formats. This section teaches the use of Macromedia’s Director and Apple's DVD Studio Pro. These powerful authoring tools are used for creating interactive CDs and DVDs, web applications and Shockwave 3D movies for the web. Interactivity, scripting, Lingo and advanced interface design are covered and students will expand their previous design and editing knowledge into this dynamic new media field.

3D:

This is one of the most challenging and interesting creative media fields. It is taught during this section using Maxon Cinema 4D, another industry-standard application. Complete animated 3D movies can be created with this software and students are encouraged to incorporate this into their existing graphics and authoring skills and, eventually, into their web and interface design.

Audio, Sampling and Sequencing:

Although often overlooked, audio manipulation is an essential skill for any prospective new media designer or producer. This section teaches the basics of analogue to digital conversion, digital audio editing and processing, the creation of playlists and an introduction to multi-track audio using Bias Peak and Digidesign’s ProTools audio software. In addition, the use of samplers and sequencing packages, such as Emagic's Logic Audio, are also covered.

Video:

Video digitising, editing and compositing are all covered in depth using software like Adobe Premier, Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe AfterEffects and Terran Interactive Cleaner. This is combined with student’s existing audio and 3D knowledge to create fully-featured video clips that can be exported as stand-alone movies or prepared for web streaming.

Advanced Computing:

This section examines the functions of different computer components including CPU’s, hard drives, removable media, interfaces and busses.

Project Management:

Throughout the course students are taught how to manage their time, their ideas, resources, creativity and themselves as multimedia producers. All practical work is subject to proposal, development and completion phases.

Note: The sections outlined above do not exist as separate modules within the course and do not necessarily reflect the order in which these subjects are taught.

Software applications instructed during the course:

Selected from: Mac OS 9 and X.2 (Jaguar), Bias Peak, Macromedia Director, Apple DVD Studio Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Quark Xpress, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, Fetch, Terran Interactive Cleaner, Maxon Cinema 4D, Macromedia Dreamweaver & Flash, Digidesign ProTools, Final Cut Pro, QTVR Authoring Studio and additional utility software applications.

* Please note: Due to rapid developments in this field, certain software and subjects on this list may be replaced, without notice, by software and subjects better-suited to the course.
